Crans-sur-Sierre and Montana,
two well-known adjoining Swiss resort towns, nestle high in the
Alps among woods, grassland and small lakes. Spreading over a
plateau situated in the sunny canton of Valais, they offer one
of the most breathtaking vistas in Switzerland.
From May 15th to October 15th, golf is the main centre of interest:
the two courses lie right in the middle of Crans, close to hotels,
apartments and chalets. The location is spell binding: views
over Mont-Blanc and the snowy Valais Alps, fir-woods, fragrant
Alpine flowers and emerald lakes. The greens and fairways are
kept in prime condition by the most modern underground sprinking
system. There are two putting greens and a driving range.
It was in 1905 that the local people were approached by a group
of British businessman, among them Sir Henry Lunn, wanting to
lease the land on which a golf-course could be constructed some
years later. The 9-hole course inaugurated in 1951 has been replaced
by the Jack Nicklaus Golf Courses the first 9 hole of which were
opened in 1988
